The Students’ Union provides a diverse selection of clubs, groups, societies and support networks for students from over 150 countries. It became the University of Nottingham in 1948, but was opened as a civil college as far back as 1881, yet it continues to modernise (an example of which is it being the home of the first new vet school to be opened in 50-years in the UK in 2006). In terms of student satisfaction, it is regularly rated in the top 15 in university polls and is rated as gold for teaching. The Student\u2019s Union has a 2,400-capacity venue with \u00a31 million worth of sound and lighting equipment, has three bars, a large sports hall and 30ft climbing wall, and a 100-station fitness suite. It truly is one of the best Student\u2019s Union buildings in the entire country.<\/p>\n

Students have the option of over 160 clubs and societies, as well as providing an in-house radio station and online magazine. The Cornerhouse is handily situated between The Glasshouse and Bowman House and is home to a cinema, bars, as well as some of the food and drink chains that we all know and love. Here, you can find Wagamama, Bella Italia, Turtle Bay, and TGI Fridays, amongst other restaurants and bars. If you are after something a little dirtier and guilty there are a few magnificent burger joints in the city. Junkyard is a hipster delight. The Bridlesmith Walk restaurant is home to a wide range of craft beers, naughty burgers, and little meaty, tasty treats. Start with the mac and cheese bites and stay for the chicken parmo or one of the burgers on the menu. Annie\u2019s Burger Shack is an institution in Nottingham, with a wide range of burgers, including the choice of veggie and vegan on most burgers on the menu (and 10% off food with a student card between 12pm and 5pm, Monday to Friday).<\/p>\n

If you fancy something a little more refined, Baresca on Byard Lane is a great tapas restaurant, and although there is no student discount they do have an afternoon deal for just over a tenner, which includes two tapas dishes, aside, and flatbread. We all know that breakfast is such an important part of the day, however, especially if you\u2019re suffering from a hangover like many Nottingham students after a big night out on the town. The biggest of all the student nights is at Ocean, which has many themed nights and is a student-only nightclub, as well as special nights that are solely for students from each specific university. Wednesday night is the Nottingham Trent Uni night at Ocean for example. You\u2019ll certainly have a good time at Ocean, no matter what day you turn up, and it is the perfect end to a Nottingham pub crawl, so make the most of your student days and have the time of your life.\"student<\/p>\n

Famous Rock Venue<\/h2>\n

At Rock City it isn\u2019t just the large array of touring bands and live music that you can enjoy as a Nottingham student, they too have a range of club nights each week. On a Wednesday each week is the official student night for Nottingham University students, whilst a Thursday night is a popular one in the city, with 2-4-1 drinks, has part of the \u2018Tuned\u2019 club night, with three different rooms to explore! Rock City is a nationally famous rock venue though and has hosted everyone from Oasis to the Arctic Monkeys.<\/p>\n

Another great student club night is at Rescue Rooms on a Saturday where there is a joint club night with Stealth. A Great Night Out<\/h2>\n

Those of you living in Byron will love Climax at the Nottingham Trent Students’ Union every Saturday night. The drinks are never that expensive and there are three floors with different DJs and genres, so when you get bored of one DJ you can go upstairs and spend some time dancing to a completely different type of music!<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great way to explore and make new friends. Another great night out is at the largest nightclub in Nottingham, PRYZM. Since its refurbishment, it has become a real gem on the Nottingham nightlife scene, with six themed rooms to choose from (including a cheese room downstairs). The Sports Club<\/h2>\n

Nottingham is a truly great sporting city, and the University of Nottingham has been voted as the sports university of 2019, highlighting the facilities and choice of sports on offer to students at the university.<\/p>\n

The sports club at the university is fantastic and students consistently compete for gold medals at the Olympic, Commonwealth and University leagues each year. Both universities inspire and push students of all backgrounds to remain active, fit and healthy at all times, and at the University of Nottingham specifically, there are more sports clubs on offer than at any other UK university. They have a state-of-the-art Sports Village that provides full access to play and engage with sports, as well as view top-class elite sportspersons compete.<\/p>\n

In terms of spectator sport there is plenty going on in Nottingham as a city. Two professional football clubs call the city home. Nottingham Forest is twice a winner of the European Cup with historic manager Brian Clough known throughout the football world. Between 1975 and 1993 he also guided them to a league title and four League Cups. Rivals Notts County play at Meadow Lane and are recognised as the oldest professional football league team in world football, having been founded in 1862, a year before the Football Association was founded.<\/p>\n

There is more than just football to enjoy as a student in Nottingham however. Trent Bridge Cricket ground is the home of Nottinghamshire Country Cricket Club and has challenged for, and won, titled in the last 20 years, as well as being a major host of international Test cricket, Twenty20 Cup finals and One Day international matches.<\/p>\n

The National Ice Centre (NIC) is home to an Olympic-sized ice rink, as well as a further ice rink. Independent Culture<\/h2>\n

The high street brands are all well and good, and in a modern city centre such as Nottingham\u2019s you would expect to see that, but it is with the quirky and the little independents that Nottingham truly shines as a city, as the Independent Shopping Trail suggests.<\/p>\n

There are several unofficial independent districts in the city, including Hockley, Derby Road, Cobden Chambers, Flying Horse Walk, and Lance Market where you can find some of the best independent boutiques and stores in the country. Wild and Baklash stand out in particular as two stores that offer customers great vintage and retro clothing options.<\/p>\n

The Treat Kitchen in Wheeler Gate is a fun sweet shop, selling all sorts of gourmet sweets, fudge, and chocolate, including your classic favourites like bon-bons and rhubarb and custard.
